This may seem like quite a familiar story to a lot of people, I am not even sure that anybody else save may be some of my friends and family would be interested in reading it.
It’s about slowly realising that your life, your values, dreams and aspirations are no longer that important to you. They have been replaced by a smouldering desire to pursue a simpler more basic life style. For me this change was like growing older, day by day you do not notice the changes until one day you look in the mirror and you suddenly see a different older person staring back at you. A significant factor in the process was the diagnosis of a health condition in itself not terminal but certainly not insignificant. I know I was still a very materialistic person
at 47. My 47th birthday present to myself was a brand spanking new cherry red Jaguar complete with cream leather upholstery and heated front seats. I was so pleased with myself the day I collected that car from the dealer. Now six years on my excitement is fuelled by searching for a second hand tractor on the Internet
I do not know for sure but I suspect a lot of people dream about buying a place in the country with a little bit of land and spending there time growing a few vegetables and may be keeping some live stock, chickens, goats, pigs may be. For most of us its just a nice thought but not a practical way of life. In the beginning it was the same for me just one of those thoughts you have like winning the lottery, great to
dream about but you know its never going to happen. Over the last six years that thought grew into a fully formed dream and from a dream in to a passion and from a passion in to an ambition and now June 2009 it’s almost a reality. The old saying “be careful of what you wish for” comes to mind as not only am I very excited about the future I am also scared and fearful mainly because I know absolutely nothing about farming or running a small holding. Oh yes I have read numerous books and magazine articles but one thing I do know and that is reading about something and doing it are two very different things!
The search for the right property has been long and quite difficult. The credit crunch and the recession have played there part in frustrating our plans
