A little Berkshire Pig History
Berkshire pigs are the oldest recorded breed in the United Kingdom and are rumoured to date back as far as the 1750’s. The breed was however officially recognised in 1884 and represents one of the founder breeds of the British Pig Association (formerly the NPBA).
The Berkshire pig breeder’s club web site details the breed origins as circa 1790 in the Thames valley possibly around the Wantage area. The breed has been improved over the years with the introduction of East Asian blood resulting in a shorter more compact pig with lighter bone structure
The Berkshire sow is an excellent mother and a heavy milk producer consequently they do not lose much weight during the period the piglets are suckling.
The Berkshire is an excellent pork pig and renown for it’s succulent joints and chops
